Nancy's Picks of the Week
Some Unusual Choices this Week
My First Pick for the Week is Marisha Pessl's outstandingly different and interesting Special Topics in Calamity Physics. This unusually structured novel with each chapter named after a famous work of literature, contains a narrator who has been moved from school to another with her professor father. Settling in North Carolina for her final year of high school, Blue is left to try to make sense of two shocking deaths. The narrator has a great voice, ironic and intelligent, and I enjoyed her perspective on the occurrences in her life very much.

My Second Pick is The Brief History of the Dead, by Kevin Brockmeier. Another unusual book set in the land between the Living and the Dead. These Dead are "living" in a land much like our own, a city, only kept from the final place by those who still remember them on earth. Yet a plague has hit, and people are coming in and out of this city faster than anyone can notice, as everyone who remembered them has died also.
Our main characters are remembered by a woman who is stuck in an Antarctic weather station, trying to get back home. She is running out of time, and as she fights for life, the existence of those she remembers hinges on the outcome of that fight. Very interesting, great voice, a different type of work.

My last choice for this month is Nora Ephron's hilarious I Feel Bad About My Neck. Every woman over 40 will relate to her discussions about aging and its effects on her life. Ephron brought us When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and Bewitched, and numerous best sellers, and she is funny, smart and honest. I really enjoyed this quick read.
